Daniel Arnold, a photographer based in New York, was struggling with his life since he was unemployed and his bank balance was quite low. But, his fortunes were changed for the better as Instagram helped him earn around $15000 dollars in a single day.
Forbes reported on how the struggling photographer decided to change his financial situation on his birthday. He realized that he had good photography skills, a good archive of photographs and a good number of followers on his Instagram account. He decided to use these to his advantage and make money. Hence, he posted a message on his Instagram account. Here is the exact message:
“Hello, I just turned 34 this second. For one day only I am selling 4×6 prints of whatever you want from my Instagram archive for $150 each. I swear I will never sell anything this cheap again. If you’re interested, send a screenshot of the photo(s) of your choice to arnoldaniel@gmail.com (one d) and I will send a PayPal invoice, followed by a signed print. Easy peasy. Happy my birthday. I love you truly.”
By posting the above message on his Instagram account on the eve of his birthday, he made a smart marketing move to sell his archive of photographs. He had taken quite a lot of good-looking photographs of the New York city which were part of his archive. When he announced he was selling them for $150 each, his followers responded immediately. Only then did he realize the true potential of his photography skills and the power of an online social networking site such as Instagram. It shows that Instagram is not only for sharing photos and networking with friends. There are good business opportunities. This can be an inspiration for anybody looking to make money online.
Arnold had a very good collection of candid photographs of the New York city which he had shot without any idea of how well they would sell. He had shot some of them using his iPhone and some others using a 35mm camera. He had around 23000 followers when he announced this offer to them. Now he has around 30000 followers on Instagram. The rate at which they were ordering his photographs proved that those photos were a big hit. At the end of the day, Arnold announced that he sold 71 prints of his photograph collection. Some of his photographs on Instagram were quite popular with more than 1000 likes. Some of his followers were keen on buying these photographs and were also willing to pay over 1000 dollars for these photos. Actor James Franco also bought one of Arnold’s photos. He still has a backlog of photograph requests from his followers and he is busy fulfilling those requests.
This incident is not merely an indication of Instagram’s earning potential. This event shows that Instagram and other social networking sites are good for a lot more than the images of the backsides of celebrities and sharing things like what you had for breakfast and other such trivial things.
